How to prepare for an outdoor family photography session?

1. Expect to have fun

My sessions are relaxed and fun. First, I’ll get you positioned in the area with the best light, then I’ll use light posing and direction to create interaction between you. Don’t worry, it won’t feel forced, we’ll play games in between to keep little ones happy.
Tell them in advance we are going to play outside as a family with Hannah on “x” day, it will help take the pressure off and prepare them for what’s happening, which will help create a more relaxed vibe from the start.

2. Be well fed and rested.
Little ones can get really crabby when they are hungry (at least mine does anyway), so make sure all the tummies are full before we start. Bring along some “clean snacks” so that if the little ones (or big ones) get hungry during the session, we can take a small break and feed them.

3. Remember to take your phones and keys out of your pockets

I will remind you of this one on the day, but phones and keys (or anything else bulky) can really stick out like a sore thumb, and leave lumps and bumps where they shouldn’t be! I can pop them in my camera bag if you don’t have one.

4. You don’t have to look at the camera! Leave the cheese at home.

I will always try and get a few “money shot” images with everyone looking. My priority is to capture your families connection with one another, so I will often ask you too look at each other. I wan’t you to play, snuggle, get close….. closer, kiss, tickle, throw the kids around, dangle them upside down and have fun together. I’m quite open to a sing-a-long if you want to go that way too :)
I’ll be darting about trying to get all the angles and the images within images, all so you have a beautiful full gallery to choose from.

5. Leave plenty of time to get there

I know what it’s like, your just about to leave the house and then, BAM…a nappy is filled (why do they always wait until you are about to step foot out of the door?).
Just leave a little extra time for things that could slow you down… traffic… pit stops…

6. Plan your outfits in advance (see my previous blog post on what to wear)

Make sure you have prepared your outfits in advance so there are no surprises on the the day.

Thanks for reading and I can’t wait to have fun with your family!!!
